Breath Of Life
Why do you like the darkness of the lounge and the freshness of its brew, when you can have the fall of evening and the love that i have for you. And why do you like that old atmosphere and for both you pay a price, oh come walk with me in the fall of the evening and I will give you the breath of life.
Mary put pen to paper as a young woman in her 30s to express how she felt in her relationship to her husband Tom. He had abandoned her to a life of poverty with their six children and house full of nothing except her love and creativity, she must have felt totally disappointed by him. This poem focuses that sense of hopelessness and unanswered questions. That love she had for him when they married was always there no matter what he did to her and she never judged him for it, in fact even after they parted ways she looked after him and kept a string close friendship going.
