To Carry an Angel

I enjoy asking those who have already read this book what in their opinion its about?

I am told that its a love story, a Mother son relationship story, and a story of hope is what I am often told. In fact I think each covers what it means to me.  For me its a look at a woman who challenged the norms, she rejected any idea which told her she could not be equal because she was a woman.  She felt and thought with her heart regardless of the outcome, her heart was her intelligence.  She was artistic to the core in dance, music, writing and painting, and it was this creativity which ultimately saved her close to the end of her life.  The funny thing is that everything she stood for when I was a kid has become quite normal now, yet she was judged harshly for her natural ability to understand and accept people.  My whole life my Mother was and still is an inspiration to me, she loved so many people who needed a mother and who needed love.  Finally at the end of what I wrote I managed to reveal what it was which sustained her and created an environment  where she was completely at peace and in love with life.

    Breath Of Life

Why do you like the darkness of the lounge and the freshness of its brew, when you can have the fall of evening and the love that i have for you. And why do you like that old atmosphere and for both you pay a price, oh come walk with me in the fall of the evening and I will give you the breath of life.

Mary put pen to paper as a young woman in her 30s to express how she felt in her relationship to her husband Tom.  He had abandoned her to a life of poverty with their six children and house full of nothing except her love and creativity, she must have felt totally disappointed by him.  This poem focuses that sense of hopelessness and unanswered questions.  That love she had for him when they married was always there no matter what he did to her and she never judged him for it, in fact even after they parted ways she looked after him and kept a string close friendship going.

it was in early march of 2020 that I sat down to write my first book, I was making notes and writing in long hand for two years before that so finally I began this journey.  I had recently found poems and letters which I had written from as young as 11 years old until 2019, these grounded me in my thinking and they revealed to me who I had been all my young years and within those writings my Mother and stories of her were always present.  I strongly encourage you to keep notes on your thoughts and feelings over the years of your life, especially how events and moments in life made you feel, what was important to you and what saved you from feeling bad about life.  This can be immensely beneficial to look back on its actually like a map of life and where life took you during your voyage.  My Mother did this, she kept notes on specific things that happened, she wrote poems and painted.  I have all of these because at a certain point she transferred them from the attic of our Gaff in the suburbs to our home in the mountains.
